Empires : 01 Monocle
Being creative types, we are always restless to do things. No sooner have we started one side project then another one pops into our heads. We want to be painters, musicians, ceramicists, short film directors, art curators, podcasters... everything. We see the creative challenges, and indulge our minds in finding subsequent solutions regardless of what life admin needs doing. We want to be creative everythings and have our own creative empires. WHY CAN'T WE HAVE IT ALL!
In part, this is why we formed The Eatery Group. Designing a nice brand or space for a restaurant is one thing, but the design goes so much further and deeper. That's why we formed our consultancy with Hospitality heros Kiehyon and Sunny: to equip us with the skills required to dig deeper and do more. We can now help design systems & procedures, floor-spaces that maximise efficiency and profitability, the most efficient staff uniforms and support materials - the list goes on. We see this as an irreplaceable addition to our company, and only want to add more from here.
In this edition of Love Made Visual, we look at this passion to expand through one of our favourite media media empires, Monocle.
01 / Monocle – a media Empire never to be repeated
If you don't know Monocle Magazine, then I'm not sure we can continue to be friends, however, this is your chance to do some research and win back my love. Monocle is a monthly magazine that explored global affairs, business, culture, design and food. It presents all these things every month in a beautifully presented 280-ish page magazine that we've subscribed to and placed lovingly on our bookcase (in chronological order) for five years. They have become global trend setters and harbingers of cool, but also an increasing voice in news and current affairs. Their brand of 'global citizenry' has resulted in countries, just as much as fashion houses, racing to be seen in its pages, all pushing the monocle life.
But it's more than just a beautiful magazine - monocle is a cafe, a magazine kiosk, a group of retails stores, 24 hour radio station, a television content producer, a producers of a clothing line, a short film producer, a newspaper, a bi-monthly annual, a book publisher, a producer of global city guides, a yearly conference organiser... do you see where I am going with this?
Since it's conception on the eve of the global financial crisis in 2007, Editor in Chief and founder Tyler Brûlé has steadily built his empire to utilise all the skills within his organisation and the partnerships he's formed in business over that time, to create a private media empire which was recently valued at around 110 million pounds. Each project is an extension of the one before, resulting in a seamless collection of business that can all bare the monocle name, and not seem disjointed. Their penultimate project was recently announced as the creation of a complete apartment building.
